Farmers kick off full-scale beet harvest By Cole Short hillsborobanner.com
Farmers in the Red River Valley kicked off the region’s full-scale sugar beet harvest at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday despite soggy soil conditions that threatened to slow fall fieldwork to a crawl.
For more than a month, caravans of beet trucks will roll to American Crystal Sugar sites near Hillsboro, Drayton, N.D., and the company’s factories in Moorhead, East Grand Forks and Crookston.
Company officials remain optimistic for a successful fall campaign despite the lingering wet weather.
“All we need is a little sun and the temperature to stay above 32 degrees and we’re golden,” Dan Gowan, American Crystal’s director of agriculture, said Monday. “Our farmers can cover the ground pretty quickly if the weather gives us a little break.”
