The Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers spend the day in St. Paul on Wednesday, educating state senators about the sugar industry in the state. Executive director, Duane Maatz, says it’s always nice to be in front of the senate ag committee members.
“It’s good to get the opportunity to update the senate ag committee members on what we do, producing sugar, the size of our industry… We also had an opportunity to talk about the economics, the numbers of jobs, and those sorts of things. We really gave them a good overview. There were a lot of thoughtful questions that our group was able to answer.”
Maatz says the makeup of the senate ag committee has changed.
“It’s not only agriculture, there are other components that require that there are people from within Minneapolis/St. Paul – members of the senate that typically wouldn’t be on that committee. But today, because of looking at consumer protection, we have a variety of folks on there that really have no agricultural backgrounds, so it’s a good idea to keep them up to date.”
