Lucknow, Nov 19 (UNI) For the second consecutive year, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is going to be the highest in the country.
Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mills Association (UPSMA) spokesperson Deepak Guptara said on Sunday that this year, too, the state could achieve the milestone for being the largest producer of sugar in the country.
“We have started early with good recovery and certainly this year, the production of sugar will cross last year's figure as cane growing area had increased in UP this year," he said.
So far this year, more a little more than 66 lakh quintal of sugar has been produced by crushing almost 688 quintal of sugarcane at 81 mills, including 67 in the private sector.
The 66 lakh quintal output this year is more than double the amount produced last year.
According to UPSMA, last year nearly 293 quintal of sugarcane was crushed at 67 mills to produce nearly 28 quintal of sugar.
Meanwhile, cane farmers in the state are yet to be receive dues amounting to Rs 804.95 crore for their produce supplied to the mills in the previous crushing season.
According to UPSMA, private mills have yet to pay Rs 663.05 crore, while cooperative mills owe Rs141.90 crore to the farmers.
