29th International Sweetener Symposium Set for Aug. 3-8
    The 29th International Sweetener Symposium, hosted by the American Sugar Alliance (ASA), is scheduled for August 3-8 at the Coeur d’Alene Golf & Spa Resort in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. 
    Traditionally, about 400 people attend the International Sweetener Symposium to hear about timely issues of significance affecting the sweetener industry, and to interact with industry colleagues. 
 
 
Mich. Bean & Beet Symposium Takes Place Feb. 21 in Saginaw
    The 2012 Michigan Bean & Beet Symposium & Trade Show takes place on Tuesday, February 21, at the Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw.

Green New Crystal Chairman, Williams Elected Vice Chairman
    Robert Green of St. Thomas, N.D., was elected chairman of American Crystal Sugar Company at the December 1 board reorganization meeting following the cooperative’s annual meeting.  A Crystal director since 2005 representing the Drayton district, Green has been a sugarbeet grower since 1976.  He also serves as a director for the American Sugarbeet Growers Association and was a director of the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association for 12 years.

Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative announced last summer the promotion of two agriculturists to new positions within the co-op.
 
 
John Richmond Honored As ‘Sugar Man of the Year 2010’
    John Richmond, former president and CEO of Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative, was honored as “Sugar Man of the Year 2010” during a May luncheon of the Sugar Club in New York City.
 
 
ASSBT Awards Go to Chertudi, Sims, Bredehoeft & Lamb
    Attendance was strong at the 35th general meeting of the American Society of Sugar Beet Technologists, held in Albuquerque, N. Mex., in early March.  Nearly 375 participants, representing 12 countries, were in attendance.
 
 
28th International Sweetener Symposium Is July 29-Aug. 3
    The 28th International Sweetener Symposium, hosted by the American Sugar Alliance, has been scheduled for July 29 to August 3, 2011, at the Stowe Mountain Lodge in Stowe, Vt.  Event information is on ASA’s website — www.sugaralliance.org.
    Traditionally, about 400 people attend the symposium to hear about timely, significant issues affecting the sweetener industry and to interact with industry colleagues.  This year’s event will include a look ahead to the next farm bill, as well as discussion of the U.S. and world market supply-demand outlook and the effects of multinational, regional and bilateral trade agreements on world sugar policies and U.S. commodity programs.
    Stowe is in north central Vermont, about 45 minutes from Burlington.
 
 
Downard Joins Betaseed Station at Kimberly, Idaho 
 
    Betaseed, Inc.,  has named Robert Downard as research agronomist and assistant station manager for the company’s Western Sugarbeet Research Center in Kimberly, Idaho.  Downard is responsible for supervising all activities associated with seed production, including steckling production.  In addition he will assist with management of the Kimberly station.

      The handsome young man at right is three-year old Caleb Rutherford, whose parents, Roy and Laura, farm near Grafton, N.D. The photo was taken during this past fall’s Red River Valley beet harvest.

     “If Caleb chooses to farm when he grows up, he will be a third-generation sugarbeet grower,”

     Laura writes.
     Caleb has two brothers — Ian, who is four, and Logan, two months.

Jay Miller ~ Steve Kober
     Betaseed recently restructured the company’s research and development organization to support key strategic initiatives.
     Jay Miller was promoted to director of breeding and product management. In this new role, Miller provides corporate leadership for all North American research, breeding and product management activities. Miller’s team includes four plant breeders, plant pathologists, product management and technical specialists.
     Miller has been at Betaseed over 25 years in various roles, including plant
breeding, station management and product management. He continues to work directly with KWS SAAT Ag, Einbeck, Germany, providing innovative, relevant technologies and genetics to North American markets.
