The sun hid out for part of the week, but for sugarbeet growers visiting from places like Michigan and the Red River Valley, early February in San Diego still provided a warm respite.
About 360 beet growers, spouses and affiliated industry traveled to southern California for the 2013 annual meeting of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association.  Along with a lot of one-on-one conversation, they also listened to speakers addressing several timely topics of importance to the nation’s sugar industry.
ASGA’s 2014 annual meeting is scheduled to take place February 9-11 in Tampa, Fla.

Barney, N.D., grower Russ Mauch completed his two-year term as president of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association during the group’s February annual meeting.  Prior to turning over the president’s gavel to Kelly Erickson, Mauch summarized the challenges and accomplishments of the past two years.  Provided here are excerpts from his talk.

Hallock, Minn., grower Kelly Erickson took the reins as president of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association during ASGA’s annual meeting in early February.  In his first address to the group as president, he introduced himself, discussed the challenges ahead, and offered a road map on how ASGA can successfully meet those challenges.  Here are his remarks.

The current president of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association, Barney, N.D., producer Russ Mauch, touched upon several key areas of ASGA priority and activity during his commentary toward the conclusion of the group’s 2011 annual meeting in Tucson, Ariz.  A significant portion of his remarks dealt with biotech issues — specifically, the long and ongoing litigation regarding the availability of Roundup Ready® sugarbeets for 2011 and beyond.  Below are excerpts from Mauch’s presentation.

The Sugarbeet Grower Magazine March 1994 Craig Anderson ASGA Former President
Craig Anderson Featured on the cover March 1994

The U.S. sugarbeet industry lost a true champion last summer with the passing of Craig Anderson. The longtime Colorado grower and former president of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association passed away on July 19 at the age of 87.
The following tribute to Craig was delivered by Alan Welp, a fellow Coloradoan and ASGA’s immediate past president, at the 2010 International Sweetener Symposium held in early August in Vail, Colo.
It’s an wonderful tribute to an outstanding individual. I had the opportunity to become well acquainted with Craig during visits to his farm near Longmont, as well as at ASGA meetings and on other occasions. He was an exceptionally gracious person. As Alan says, he had a huge heart and was a great friend to everyone. A wonderful man. — Don Lilleboe
